Philosophy
The debate about proprietary code versus open source software is endless, and I do not intent to discuss the matter as a whole here, but
rather argue for why I choose the latter for my systems.
- The love. This is an argument that I think is often forgotten in the debate about Open Source. I use it because I like it. I
like to be able to control every little nob there is in a software system.
- The philosophy. The Open Source community's philosophy is refreshing in a corporation dominated world.
- The documentation. As opposed to general belief amongst non-UNIX users, the documentation of Open Source projects is very
extensive. I can solve any problem in my systems with some time.
- The price. I neither need to go bankrupt nor to become a crook to set up an advanced private system.
- The usage. It is like anything; once learned, it's easy to use.
- The applications The range of applications in Linux is endless, although I'd like to see a graphical suite like the one
Adobe provides in the *nix world.
- The security The fact that the source code is open to the world makes a system more secure because there are so many
people that error check it and test it.
